You’ve taken the big real estate leap and now you are moving to your new home. But how do you get all of your belongings to your new home without a massive headache? Different people have many different methods of moving and sifting through everyone’s ideas can be a chore. To help untangle the mess of moving, I’ve assembled this checklist for you to consider:
- The best way to move is with proper supplies. Packing your valuables with proper materials will ensure they reach their destination unharmed. Be sure to use plenty of bubble wrap, newspaper or packing paper and/or styrofoam.
- Use the right sized boxes. Small moving boxes are perfect for dish packs and heavy and fragile items. Medium-sized boxes are among the most commonly utilized boxes for moving. They are perfect for many household items and small appliances. They are often compatible with glass pack and dish pack inserts to keep them from harm. Large boxes are best for light or medium weight goods such as throw pillows, clothing and lampshades. Extra large moving boxes are great for bulky, soft and lightweight goods such as clothing, comforters, pillows and blankets. Heavy duty boxes have reinforced walls for electronics, books and other extremely heavy items that would otherwise break through the bottom of a normal box. Finally, wardrobe boxes are equipped with hanging rods so that you can transport clothing without it getting wrinkled. They are available in a variety of lengths depending on if you need them for long dresses or shirts. Using the right sized box for a particular item will make moving much easier and safer for your valuables.
- Organize and mark your boxes. Color-coded stickers can be a great way to indicate which room in a house a particular item or box belongs. Also, a permanent marker can be used to identify the contents in order to save time in finding things you need.
- Create an “Open Me First” box. Moving day can take a lot out of you. You don’t want to spend a lot of time opening up boxes trying to find essentials you will need for your first night in your new home. Pack bedding, bathroom toiletries (and toilet paper!), and necessary kitchen supplies so you can have what you need right away.
